
Before firing up your Blackstone, take a few minutes to make sure the propane system is safe and properly connected. A simple soapy-water leak test can help identify problems around the tank, regulator, hose, and griddle connection before they become serious.
Most of us are eager to start cooking as soon as the propane tank is connected. We are thinking about smash burgers, breakfast, fried rice, or whatever else is about to hit the griddle—not the regulator and hose underneath it.
However, checking the propane system is an important part of safely operating any gas-powered griddle.
A leak test takes only a few minutes, requires supplies you probably already have, and can reveal a loose connection, damaged hose, or faulty component before you ignite the burners.
I recently shared a video demonstrating the process, but I also wanted to provide written instructions that Blackstone owners can save and reference whenever needed.
This guide follows Blackstone’s current instructions for griddles connected to a standard 20-pound propane tank and regulator. Always consult the manual for your specific Blackstone model as well. Blackstone maintains an online collection of manuals that can be searched using the model number found on the unit’s silver identification label.
Why Should You Perform a Leak Test?
Propane travels from the tank through the regulator and hose before entering the griddle’s gas system. A problem anywhere along that path can affect both safety and performance.
Blackstone recommends performing a leak test when:
- You are experiencing gas-flow or heating problems
- The regulator’s flow limiter may have been activated
- The griddle has not been used for an extended period
- You are preparing the griddle for a new cooking season
- A propane connection has been disconnected and reconnected
- You suspect a hose, regulator, tank, or connection may be leaking
Blackstone specifically recommends inspecting the tank and regulator and completing a leak test when preparing a griddle after a period of storage.
I also believe it is a good habit to perform one when setting up a new griddle or changing something within the propane system. It is a small step that provides valuable peace of mind.
What You Will Need
You do not need specialized equipment to conduct the test.
Gather:
- Water
- Liquid dish soap
- A cup or small container
- A spray bottle or clean paintbrush
Blackstone’s current instructions call for a solution consisting of approximately:
90% water and 10% liquid soap.
The soap creates a visible film over the propane connections. Escaping gas causes that film to expand into growing bubbles, revealing the location of a leak.
Before Beginning
Perform the test outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
Keep cigarettes, lighters, candles, electrical sparks, and all other ignition sources away from the griddle and propane tank.
Most importantly:
Do not ignite the griddle during a leak test.
The burner knobs should remain in the OFF position throughout the entire procedure. That warning is included directly in Blackstone’s current leak-test guidance.
Soapy water—not a flame—is what should be used to locate a potential propane leak.
How to Perform the Soapy-Water Leak Test
Step 1: Turn everything off
Confirm that every burner-control knob is turned completely to the OFF position.
Then close the valve on the propane tank.
Do not begin applying the solution while gas is actively flowing.
Step 2: Inspect the propane system
Before connecting or opening anything, look over the equipment.
Check:
- The propane-tank valve
- The regulator
- The regulator connector
- The full length of the hose
- The point where the regulator assembly connects to the griddle
Look for visible cracks, cuts, punctures, abrasions, loose fittings, damaged seals, or other signs of wear.
If the tank valve or its seal appears damaged, do not use that tank. Blackstone advises replacing the propane tank when the seal at the valve outlet is cracked or damaged.
Step 3: Connect the regulator to the propane tank
Attach the regulator connector to the propane tank.
Make sure the connection is:
- Properly aligned
- Fully seated
- Hand-tightened
- Not cross-threaded
Blackstone cautions against overtightening the connector or using tools because doing so can damage the seal.
The connection should be secure, but this is not a situation where more force is automatically better.
Step 4: Prepare the soap solution
Mix approximately nine parts water with one part liquid dish soap.
Pour the solution into a spray bottle or leave it in a container so it can be applied with a paintbrush.
You want enough solution to thoroughly coat each connection and the complete regulator hose.
Step 5: Apply the solution
Spray or brush the soapy solution onto all of the areas Blackstone identifies for testing:
- The connection between the regulator and propane tank
- The connection between the regulator assembly and the griddle
- The housing surrounding the regulator
- The entire length of the regulator hose
Do not limit the test to the tank connection. A hose can develop damage away from either end, and a leak can occur around the regulator housing or the griddle-side connection.
Apply a generous coating so you can easily see how the solution behaves.
Step 6: Slowly open the propane valve
Leave all burner knobs in the OFF position.
Slowly open the valve on the propane tank.
Watch every area coated with the soap solution.
It is important to distinguish between bubbles created when you sprayed or brushed on the solution and bubbles produced by escaping gas.
The bubbles you applied may sit in place or gradually disappear. A leak will cause bubbles to continually form, expand, or grow in a specific area.
Take your time and inspect every connection, the regulator housing, and the full hose.
What Should You Do if You Find a Leak?
If you see bubbles growing around a connection:
- Immediately close the propane-tank valve.
- Confirm that the connection is aligned correctly.
- Check that it is secure and not cross-threaded.
- Reconnect it properly if necessary.
- Repeat the complete leak test.
Blackstone recommends checking and retesting connections when the leak appears where the regulator attaches to either the propane tank or the griddle.
Do not light the griddle simply because the leak appears small.
A propane connection should not be considered safe until it passes the test without producing growing bubbles.
If the leak remains after the connection has been checked and retested, stop using the griddle. Blackstone directs owners to contact its customer-support team and recommends including photographs of the leak and regulator information when possible.
Do not attempt to patch a damaged propane hose with tape or make unauthorized repairs to the regulator.
What if You Do Not See Any Growing Bubbles?
If you have carefully inspected all test areas and no bubbles continue to form or grow:
- Close the propane-tank valve.
- Wipe away the soap solution.
- Allow the connections and components to dry.
- Follow your griddle’s normal lighting instructions when you are ready to cook.
Remember that passing a leak test does not replace regular visual inspections. Continue checking the hose, regulator, tank, and fittings for damage throughout the life of the griddle.
Common Leak-Test Mistakes
Igniting the burners during the test
The burners must remain off. The test is designed to check the pressurized propane system without igniting the griddle.
Using an open flame to search for a leak
Never use a lighter, match, torch, or other flame to locate escaping propane. Blackstone’s test uses soapy water and specifically warns users not to ignite the appliance during the procedure.
Testing only the propane-tank connection
The tank connection is only one possible leak location. Test both ends of the system, the regulator housing, and the full length of the hose.
Opening the tank before applying the solution
Apply the soapy water first. Then slowly open the propane valve while watching the coated areas.
Mistaking existing suds for a leak
Applying the solution naturally creates some bubbles. You are looking for bubbles that repeatedly form, increase in size, or continue growing in one particular location.
Overtightening the regulator connector
Hand-tighten the connector and make sure it is fully seated. Do not use a wrench or pliers to force it tighter. Blackstone warns that overtightening can damage the seal.
Continuing to cook after discovering a leak
Finding a leak is not the time to decide that the cook is probably still safe. Close the tank and resolve the problem before using the griddle again.
A Leak Test Can Also Help Diagnose Performance Problems
Not every leak announces itself with an obvious smell or sound.
Sometimes the first sign is poor griddle performance.
You may notice:
- Flames that remain unusually low
- Burners that do not heat properly
- Difficulty maintaining temperature
- Inconsistent gas flow
- A regulator that repeatedly activates its safety system
Blackstone recommends checking the propane connections and completing a leak test when troubleshooting continued low-flame or low-heat problems.
A leak test will not diagnose every heating problem, but it is an important safety check before moving on to other troubleshooting steps.
Do Tabletop Blackstone Griddles Use the Same Process?
Many 17-inch and 22-inch tabletop griddles are designed to operate with one-pound propane bottles, although some can use an approved adapter hose and a larger tank.
The placement and orientation of those bottles and regulators can differ from a full-size griddle connected directly to a 20-pound tank. Blackstone notes that the regulator on a tabletop system should remain above the one-pound bottle and that users should follow the installation directions in the product manual.
Use the instructions provided for your exact tabletop model and fuel configuration rather than assuming every connection is identical.
Make the Leak Test Part of Your Routine
A leak test is not exciting. It will probably never receive as many views as a steak sear, smash burger, or breakfast cook.
But it is one of the most important procedures a Blackstone owner can know.
Before the first cook of the season, after reconnecting propane equipment, or whenever something about the fuel system does not appear right, take a few minutes to check it.
Mix the solution.
Coat the connections, regulator, and hose.
Slowly open the tank.
Watch for growing bubbles.
That small amount of time can identify a problem before the burners are ever lit.
Final Thoughts
Cooking outdoors should be fun, but safe operation has to come first.
Inspecting your equipment and performing a leak test may not be the most glamorous part of owning a Blackstone, but it is an easy and responsible habit. Once you know the process, it requires only a few basic supplies and a few minutes of your time.
Before you fire up the griddle, make sure the propane is traveling only where it is supposed to go.
Then you can light the burners and get back to the best part—cooking.
